After the recent successes of the AfD in Bavaria and Hessen, it seems obvious to many that so many have voted for the populists because they are worried about the consequences of increasing immigration. Which is why the federal government hastily decided to speed up deportations. The results of a Europe-wide evaluation over two decades, which populism researcher Robert Gold has just completed, suggest that the reasons lie deeper. According to the study, fewer people vote for extreme right-wing parties where economically successful regional policies were previously pursued.
We discussed the results with the Robert Gold in our New Economy Short Cut on 19 October 2023.
