Last December, the now Nobel Prize winner Simon Johnson was a guest in our New Economy Short Cut – to discuss the book ‘Power and Progress’, which he wrote with his current co-Nobel Prize winner Daron Acemoglu. In the book, the two describe the extent to which the state has always played a role in determining the direction of technological change over the centuries – in contrast to the still widespread idea of technology-open competition, in which the market (only) decides on the major trends. As there are often good reasons for state influence, Acemoglu and Johnson have derived the concept of ‘directed technological change’ from all of this. In view of the social dangers associated with the development of artificial intelligence, for example, it may well be desirable to steer technological change through the state.

The full Short Cut with Simon Johnson (MIT) and Achim Wambach (ZEW) in the re-live here. Moderated by Nicola Brandt from the OECD Berlin Center, with whom we organised the Short Cut.

ABOUT NEW PARADIGM

KNOWLEDGE BASE

After decades of overly naive market belief, we urgently need new answers to the great challenges of our time. More so, we need a whole new paradigm to guide us. We collect everything about the people and the community who are dealing with the question of a new paradigm and who analyze the historical and present impact of paradigms and narratives – whether in new contributions, performances, books and events.
